You know how hanging file folders have slots for plastic tabs? You can place your tabs all in one row (straight line filing) which I promote, or you can zig zag if you prefer. You can also put the file tab in the front of the file folder or--place it in the back. I have always done the latter but recently have made the switch towards the front. Now when I need to file something, I just find the tab, pull it towards me, and drop the piece of paper inside. With the new way (tab in front) my most recent paperwork is sure to be found in the front of the file--love it!(Image from Flickr Member Ed Ludwick for use under Creative Commons License)
